Why we ran this
Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini "what are the best AI tool directories to submit to?" and you get confident lists. We wanted to know what actually happens when you follow that advice — not in theory, but with a real site, real forms, and a log of every attempt. We run Verified Tools (an AI tool directory ourselves), so we're both the lab and the rat: we scanned five AI engines for the sources they cite on these questions, then tried to get listed on each one.
Methodology in one line: citation scan across 5 engines (Aug 28, 2026) → collect every cited host → visit each, find the submission path, attempt it, log the outcome. Statuses below are as of August 30, 2026.
Finding 1: Only 16% of AI-cited hosts have a free door
Of the 31 hosts our five-engine scan surfaced as citations for directory-recommendation questions, 11 had a submission form at all — and only 5 were actually free:

The uncomfortable takeaway: the pages AI engines cite are mostly pay-to-play. If you're budgeting a "free directory submission" campaign based on the lists AI gives you, expect roughly one door in six to open without a credit card.
Finding 2: "Free" almost always means "badge for dofollow"
Across the free tiers we actually submitted to, one pricing structure kept repeating — three of the four sites we completed (TheSaaSDir, LaunchBoosts, Smol Launch) use the exact same three-tier logic:
- Free queue → you get a nofollow link
- Free + embed their badge on your site → the link becomes dofollow
- Pay → dofollow without the badge
The badge is the product. It's a link exchange dressed as a listing: they get a dofollow link from every free-tier member's footer, you get one back from their directory. If you're doing this at any scale, prepare a dedicated badge slot in your footer up front — after that, each new badge is a one-line change. (We audited what those badges are actually worth in our DR growth post: of 15 badge-tier listings we checked, 8 were still dofollow, 2 had been silently switched to nofollow, and 1 had disappeared.)
Finding 3: "Submitted" and "listed" can be 46 weeks apart
The single most surprising number in our log. Two sites, same free path, same week:
- Smol Launch: submitted Aug 28 → launch slot confirmed for the week of Oct 12, 2026. About 7 weeks.
- LaunchBoosts: submitted Aug 28 → free queue position implies listing around the week of Jul 12, 2027. That's 46 weeks, behind ~697 queued submissions.
Same effort, 39 weeks of difference. If you're submitting because you want results this quarter, check the queue length before you fill in the form — a listing that goes live next summer might as well not exist for your current campaign.
Finding 4: The real filter isn't money — it's authentication
Automation-resistant walls killed more attempts than pricing did. From our log: email OTP (aitoolsrecap.com), reCAPTCHA v2 (aidirectori.es), mandatory Google sign-in (stork.ai), Cloudflare bot blocking (freeaio.com), and one submit API that just returned 500 (saascity.io). None of these cost money — they cost founder time, one CAPTCHA at a time. Budget for it.
What we'd actually do first (founder checklist)
Based on the log, in order of return on effort:

- Smol Launch / TheSaaSDir-type badge sites — free if you're willing to host a badge; batch them so you only deploy your badge footer once.

best-of-ai/ai-directories) — a PR costs minutes; merge rates are low but the link is real when it lands. - Skip long queues for near-term campaigns — anything with a 6-month-plus backlog can't affect this quarter.
- Re-verify your dofollow links quarterly — our badge audit found ~1 in 5 silently degraded.
What this dataset is and isn't
This is a snapshot from one site's submission campaign, logged Aug 28–30, 2026, against the hosts five AI engines happened to cite that week.
